Hello! With the opening of my web page and my first exhibition I have given a lot of thought to the issue of what art really is. I have read nothing on the philosophy of art and its source or on what we really mean by art. I can only share my point of view which may or may not be shared by any philosophers, artists or critics. I deeply believe that it is the philosophers who define art, not the artists themselves, not the critics, not the spectators or participants in the admiration (or not) of pieces of art. But it is the artists only who create art, critics who praise it or destroy the joy of taking it in and spectators who admire or reject it. There are very few pieces of art (if any) which have been admired by all. For me art is a pot in which you can’t taste individual ingredients, but which gives a taste so unique that you can’t be indifferent to what you taste. You either adore it and swallow or you spit it out wondering what made you taste it in the first place, but you taste it nevertheless! Art is a talent, a craft, imagination, a skill, a feeling (love or hate), religion (or its lack), all in one big pot. Art creates sensitivity in people, ability to move them either way, as art can be ugly or amazingly beautiful, can be cruel or soothing, can be aggressive or tranquil, wicked and twisted or straightforward. It is the individual artist who cooks the dish adding the ingredients gradually according to his ability and sensitivity, to his will, taste and not overdoing any of them. Am I an artist? Deep inside I feel I am, however, I cannot place myself in the position of a judge! I only know I make people happier for a little moment when they see what I have created. I watched people at my exhibition when they leaned over each piece of art, took it in their hands and told me they would love to have it at home. And, to tell you the truth, not in a modest way: I was proud. And happy, too! Now, have a look yourself at what I have created, and tell me: Is it art or blasphemy? June 20th, 2008 |
